MCAT--- MEDICAL COLLEGE ADMISSION TEST Saba Fatima (KEMU 2006-11) (A brief guide for the entry test aspirants, by a fresh candidate)
After 2 years tough study of intermediate Pre Medical students have to cross another bridge- MCAT, in order to meet their destination- Medical College. MCAT….Medical College Admission Test is an MCQ based test which is held by the University of Engineering and Technology (UET)
PAPER PATTERN AND MARKING OF THE TEST:
MCAT carries 1100 marks and only 30% of these marks are considered in making the merit for medical college. There are total 220 questions and four subjects are included. The subjects and total no of their questions are as follows
As already mentioned, it is an MCQ based test, so there will be 220 statements in the paper each with four options and you have to mark the most appropriate option. As far marking is concerned, each question of paper carries 5 marks so total becomes 1100. But the most important point in case of marking is that of NEGATIVE MARKING……each question carries 5 marks but if you attempt any question wrongly, 6 marks will be deducted instead of 5 (ie you get a -1 instead of getting a zero out of five). So if you are confused in any question, leave that question but don’t mark wrong answer because Zero mark is awarded for an unattempted question. And if you mark two choices for one question, (e.g. if you mark both A and B choices), the question will be considered wrong and you'll get a negative mark for that too, just as if it were wrong.
LEARNING TIPS:
The syllabus to be followed for MCAT is simply the course books of intermediate……NO EXTRA COACHING BOOKS ARE REQUIRED, which are available in the market. Be to your course books. For A-Levels students, syllabus is similar, although they have to pay a little more attention to get through these books.
BIOLOGY….. Biology carries maximum marks in the test. Besides it is the easiest subject and u can score maximum marks in it. The only tip for biology is DO READ BOOK AGAIN AND AGAIN. Because simply the lines of book are asked as questions and you have to mark the right answer. The usually asked questions are on terminologies, important figures and scientific names. Besides there are differentiating terminologies e.g. in chap 7, there are two terms antiseptics and antibiotics, difference of these terminologies should be learnt as they are frequently asked.
CHEMISTRY…. A combination of numerical and theoretical questions. Out of total 60 questions, only 10% are numerical questions. Generally from part-1, numerical questions, different kinds of terminologies, laws and different aspects of laws are frequently asked. And from part 2, which constitutes organic and inorganic chemistry, questions on chemical reactions and their conditions and uses of different elements / compounds are frequently asked. So in order to secure maximum marks in chemistry, make yourself perfect in
PHYSICS…. Generally the most difficult subject for students. Out of total 60 questions, almost 60% questions are numerical. Sometimes this is the most confusing part of the paper. Although no question is asked out of syllabus even then the paper creates some problems and this is due to the way of asking a question. But in order to secure good marks in physics, YOUR CONCEPTS SHOULD BE CLEARED and you should be fully aware of each and every aspect of one topic. Normally the numerical questions are asked from volume 1 and values of constant figures are asked from volume 2. Besides, questions on laws, terminologies and relations are usually asked. In order to attempt numerical questions easily, do practice and learn all formulas perfectly plus you should know relationship of different formulas, as sometimes such questions are asked which can be solved by using different formulas. So, in physics, pay due attention to numerical and mathematical figures. But do not neglect theoretical questions as 40% questions are asked out of this portion.
ENGLISH…. English section caries minimum marks in MCAT and accounts for only 14% of total marks but this subject is usually most important in determining the final merit. And the key point for this subject is this ENGLISH SECTION IS NOT TOUGH IF YOU HAVE GOOD EXPOSURE TO PROPER ENGLISH. In English section, usually 2 types of questions are asked:
1. Vocabulary portion…..10 words of vocabulary are asked and you have to mark the correct answer. For vocabulary, do read course books of English: short stories, novel, essays, plays and poems and learn meaning of difficult words. 2. Grammar section…..20 statements are asked in this section. And these statements comprise of grammar usage, tense errors and spelling mistakes. Usually you should learn parts of speech, prepositions, tenses and their usage. For grammar section, do practice and you can use any recommended English grammar for this purpose. Besides, in order to be perfect in grammar, you may use TOEFL English as well
NOTE: Do not use any coaching book except your course books. Simply start reading from 1st page until the last word (including footnotes, notes below the diagrams, flow charts, tables and GLOSSARY). NOT EVEN A SINGLE WORD SHOULD BE LEFT UNREAD.
SOME EXTRA TIPS: Usually, there is a concept that entrance test is something very difficult and out of course test, but this is not true. Entry test is a quite simple paper which is asked from your course books but the difference is made in the way of asking a question which makes the test confusing but not difficult. And the confusion can be overcome by proper study. During the whole preparation session, give proper attention to your study plus your health as well. But just 2 days before test, stop studying. Just make yourself relaxed by enjoying with your friends and family. Take a proper sleep so that you can be fresh. And on the test day, get up early, say your prayers, pick up all your required things specially your ADMIT CARD and come out of home for the test but with full confidence. Always be in high spirits and think for best. Go to the examination hall before time….stay cool and confident…go to your seat and make yourself comfortable there. During the test, be to your paper only….in each examination hall, there are question papers with four different colors and with different arrangement of questions……so all the students have different question paper and you may get in trouble by asking anybody else. The question paper is given to you in the form of a booklet of specific color with answer sheet in it. Carefully fill your answer sheet. Firstly check that the number written on your question booklet and answer sheet match with each other. Then write your name, admit card number and color of your booklet on answer sheet. After filling your answer sheet open your question booklet. The question paper consists of four sections as described above…..you can start with any section and from any question….but while attempting the paper be careful about question numbers and their options as you may mark a wrong answer. During the whole paper, stay confident and relaxed. And even you don’t know some answer or you are confused or you have forgotten something, stay confident and attempt other questions. Don’t waste your time on those questions; you may ponder over them at the end. After finishing your paper, get through the paper and after being sure that you have finished, place the answer sheet in your question booklet and handover the booklet to invigilator on duty.
ABOUT THE RESULT…… Usually UET announces the result after one week and you may get aware of your result from UET. After a few days result is available on UET official website and you can check it from there as well.
